Brancusi, Constantin Pronounced As: bränkyooz, Rom. bränkoosh , 1876-1957, Romanian sculptor. Brancusi is considered one of the foremost of modern artists. In 1904 he went to Paris, where he worked under Mercié. He declined Rodin's invitation to work in his studio. Because of his radical, economic style, his abstract sculptures, The Kiss (1908), Sleeping Muse (1910), and the portrait of Mlle Pogany (1923; Musée d'Art moderne, Paris) were the subjects of much controversy.

Brancusi, Constantin: Overview
Romanian sculptor, whose seminal work defined modern concepts of forms in sculpture, painting, and industrial design. Constantin Brancusi was born in Pestisani, Gorj, on February 21, 1876, into a large family of peasant extraction. He studied art in Craiova and Bucharest before going to Paris in 1904, where he assisted briefly for Auguste Rodin. Brancusi early work was influenced by Rodin and by impressionists, but after 1908 he rapidly evolved his characteristic personal style.
