Braque, geboren am 13. Mai 1882 in Argenteuil, studierte an der Académie Humbert in Paris und 1903 kurzfristig an der École des Beaux Arts. 1905 schloß er sich, eingeführt durch Émile-Othon Friesz, den Fauves an und arbeitete mit Friesz 1906 in Antwerpen und L´Estaque. Dabei entstanden die Bilder "Hafen in Antwerpen" und "Der Landungssteg von L´Estaque".
