Flaxman, John, 1755-1826, English sculptor and draftsman. At 20 he went to work for Josiah Wedgwood, designing the cameo-like decorations for Wedgwood's pottery.

Second son of John Flaxman the elder, a supplier of plaster casts, John Flaxman jnr was an artistic infant prodigy who was awarded a silver medal at the Academy Schools in 1771. In 1775 he commenced working for Wedgwood, for whom he designed and adapted classical scenes and also portrait medallions.
