Edward, the eldest surviving son of Henry III and Eleanor of Provence, was born in 1239. When Edward was fifteen he married Eleanor of Castile. The couple had sixteen children but most of them did not reach adulthood.

Edward I: King Edward I
Edward I, b. June 17, 1239, d. July 7, 1307, king of England (1272-1307) completed the conquest of Wales and temporarily subdued Scotland. He was the eldest son of HENRY III. In 1254 he was made duke of Gascony and married Eleanor of Castile (d. 1290). In contrast to his father, Edward showed masterfulness in the disputes with the English barons following the governmental reforms instituted by the Provisions of Oxford (1258).

Edward I. Later in 1265 Henry's son Edward defeated Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham. Simon died and Edward became de facto ruler, although he wasn't crowned until his father's death in 1273. Edward I, called Longshanks because of his lanky build, was a good administrator and a very good warrior. He frequently consulted his knights and townsmen about his decisions.
